The Albums

“Outlandos d'Amour”, the first album by the Police was extremely difficult for them. They had no manager, no record deal and a tiny budget. When Mile Copeland III, Stewart Copeland’s brother, first heard "Roxanne" he contacted A&M records and obtained a record deal for them. This was released in 1978, then re-released in 1979. It was the re-release that helped the Police gain recognition in both the UK  as well as other countries, in particular Australia. As a result of this success this led to a Gig at the New York club CBGB as well as United States tour in which they toured around America in a Ford Econoline van!

The police had their first international hit in Australia which was as a result of them gaining popularity due to their first Australian Tour. Triple C, the only non-commercial rock station in Australia was instrumental (please excuse the pun) in boosting their profile by supporting them so enthusiastically.
Due to the fantastic promotion of their material by the station this led to their music videos being aired on Coundown (no Des Lynham or Richard Whiteley here!) in Australia.

October 1979 saw the release of their second album “Reggatta de Blanc” which was a massive international success, selling successfully in many countries and included the “Message in a Bottle”   their first number 1 hit   and “Walking on the Moon” which although not a number 1 hit was a chart topper.

March 1980 saw the Police perform their first world tour.
May 1980 saw the release by A&M of “Six Pack” which contained the 5 previous singles in their original sleeves. By all accounts this was an expensive piece of memorabilia.

The autumn of 1980 saw the release of the third album, Zenyatta Mondatta. Once again one of the singles from the album "Don't Stand So Close to Me" was a number one hit and De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da", was extremely well received in the States.

1981 saw the release of their fourth album “Ghost in the Machine” containing the hits "Invisible Sun", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” and "Spirits in the Material World.”

Their fifth and last album, “Synchronicity” was released in 1983. Single hits from the album include "Wrapped Around Your Finger", "Every Breath You Take" and "King of Pain". The album was simultaneous number 1 in both the UK and the US. It stayed in the US charts for 17 weeks but in Britain only stayed number 1 for two weeks.
