History

Following the failure of his previous band “Curved Air” Stewart Copland was keen to form a new three-piece group and join the growing punk scene in London. Sting and Henry Padovani joined Stewart Copeland and began rehearsing in January 1977. In February they recorded their first single “Fall Out / Nothing Achieving.” Paul Mulligan, their acting manager funded the first recording himself. During the months of March and April they were the support act for Cherry Vanilla and Wayne County & The Electric Chairs.

During May Sting was invited by Mike Howlett to form Strontium 90, he brought with him Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers with him. An album was produced and they performed at a Gong reunion concert held in Paris at the end of May.

During July ‘77, Copeland, Sting, Padovani, and Summers started performing as a four-piece version of the Police. Unfortunately Padovani skill as a guitarist was not particularly strong and he left the band in August.

The lineup of Copeland, Sting, and Summers endured until the band eventually split.

Before their first album serendipity struck. They were offered a commercial for Wrigleys spearmint chewing gum with one condition   bleach the hair blonde! This striking image stuck and remained with them until they eventually split.
